Nanotechnology in Waste Management: A Chemical Perspective

Waste management is a critical environmental challenge exacerbated by rapid industrialization, urbanization, and population growth. Conventional methods like incineration and landfilling fall short of addressing the complex composition and long-term impact of various waste streams. Nanotechnology offers promising solutions by leveraging nanomaterials’ unique properties. This chapter explores the relevance of nanotechnology for the waste management, focusing on nanomaterial-based adsorbents, nano-filters, photocatalysis, and nano-sensors. Nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, metal nanoparticles, and zeolites demonstrate exceptional capabilities in pollutant removal and water treatment. Nano-filters employ nanoscale pores to selectively absorb contaminants, while photocatalysis utilizes light-driven reactions to break down pollutants. Nano-sensors enable real-time monitoring of waste properties, facilitating informed decision-making in waste management. Case studies highlight the versatility and effectiveness of nano-sensors in detecting environmental contaminants. Overall, nanotechnology shows great potential in revolutionizing waste management techniques, offering sustainable and efficient solutions to mitigate environmental pollution.
