The paper presents an overview, from the geotechnical engineering perspective, of a challenging recent bridge project in Corona, California. This paper covers the following key issues: (1) project requirements, (2) site conditions and constraints associated with the geotechnical exploration program, (3) geologic-seismic hazards, (4) preliminary level geotechnical investigation to develop foundation design recommendations to complete the 100% level plans and specifications for bidding, (5) geotechnical challenges to develop foundation design recommendations, (6) writing specifications that would minimize the potential for change orders during construction, (7) final level geotechnical investigation to justify or confirm assumptions that were made during the preparation of the 100% level design package, and (8) Oscillator Casing methodology and associated construction challenges during the construction of the Cast-In-Drilled-Hole Piles for the bridge foundation.
