Overview of Work on Sigma Function from Historical Viewpoint
摘要
This chapter aims to put the sigma function into a historical perspective. In searching for the origin of periodic real or complex functions, we were inevitably led to problems of engineering and the art of craft. The interplay of transcendental and algebraic curves, which will be one of the main themes of this book, was understood incrementally. We also found several little-known calculations, forerunners of the “integrable hierarchies” that emerged in the 1970s.
