Fertilizers are indispensable for sustaining farm productivity. In order to improve fertilizer use efficiencies and minimize the cost of subsidies besides self-reliance in the country, nanofertilizers were introduced in India in 2021 and, thereafter, there is a growing interest in the fertilizer industries to introduce such novel forms of fertilizers with an intent to sustain the productivity of crops with minimal input and without associated environmental hazards. This chapter highlights the status of nanofertilizers, regulatory frameworks available in the country and abroad for notifications, label claims, risk assessment protocols, besides current scenarios of nanofertilizer production and supply and quality control mechanisms. Indeed, India is the first country to have the “DBT Guidelines for the Evaluation of Nano-based Nano-Agri Inputs and Food Products in India” since 2020 that facilitated notification of nano urea in 2021 and enabled the commercial scale production and supply of nanofertilizers in the country. The guideline encompasses risk assessment and sequential steps involved in the evaluation of nanoproducts and their safety against various trophic levels such as microbes, predators, parasites, honeybees, earthworms, plants, and humans. After all the tests are completed, nanofertilizers are further evaluated for their compliance with a specific set of stipulated parameters by FCO, namely particle size (hydrodynamic and physical), zeta potential (stability), pH, viscosity, PDI (poly dispersity index) and nutrient concentrations. These parameters are also used for the label claims and the maintenance of the quality control by the industries. Further, there is a DST set of guidelines to meet the safety requirements of industries undertaking the production and supply of nanoproducts, including nanofertilizers. Overall, this book chapter concludes that there is a set of stipulated stringent guidelines for the evaluation, notification, production, and supply of nanofertilizers and the same is being used for the quality control of nanofertilizers.
