Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill], one of the richest protein sources, is considered a versatile legume crop distributed worldwide. Numerous insect pests and diseases affect the production and productivity of soybean across the world. The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, is a significant threat to soybean crops in India and globally. Extensive biological and molecular research have identified two separate biotypes of B. tabaci in India, which are the most widespread and destructive to the crops. Whiteflies complete their biology in a very short period and can have overlapping generations. These pests can cause three types of damage to plants, including direct damage by sucking phloem sap, indirect damage by reducing photosynthesis by secreting honeydew on affected leaves, and transmission of virus diseases. The whitefly serves as a significant vector for transmitting various plant viruses. It transmits yellow mosaic disease in soybean, black gram, and green gram, which significantly influences the production of these legumes in India. Modern agricultural practices, such as intensive cultivation of single crops and the excess and injudicious use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, have contributed to the prevalence and distribution of the whitefly. Understanding the whitefly’s biology, damaging nature, and seasonal activity is most important to developing economic and readily available pest management strategies. Hence, this chapter aims to contribute to compiling enough information on whitefly infestation, biology, and management.
