Rural areas serve as a significant cradle of ecological civilization, with rural education playing a crucial role in its development. In China, the vast rural landscapes and rich indigenous culture have provided a fertile ground for developing an ecological ideology that fosters ecological civilization. Informed by China’s deep insights and extensive experience in ecological civilization, this chapter explores the historical context of rural development in China and the nurturing of the ideology of ecological civilization. The ancient philosophies of Taoism and Confucianism have laid the groundwork for the principles of harmony with nature and adherence to natural laws. Since the establishment of New China in 1949, the nation has amassed a wealth of experience in rural development. However, the ongoing urbanization and industrialization have posed several challenges to rural development, including socioeconomic and environmental challenges. The education system is also strongly impacted by the wider urban-rural division, leading to a myriad of educational challenges, such as inadequate facilities, a shortage of qualified teachers, and the underperformance of rural students. In light of the legendary philosophy of ecological civilization and the contemporary challenges encountered by rural regions and rural education, a new approach is proposed in this chapter to integrate ecological civilization into rural education in China. The ecological civilization education concept goes toward the establishment of a symbiotic relationship between educational practices, individuals, and the ecosystem in rural settings. The proposed concept is underpinned by the rural regions’ wealth of natural resources, high-quality environment, spacious location, and the richness of indigenous cultures. Ecological civilization rural education can be developed through five intersectional dimensions: the natural ecology, which encompasses the biological and physical aspects of the environment; the economic ecology, highlighting the economic development and mutual integration of education and economic elements; social ecology, addressing the human and community dimensions; the digital ecology, exploring the role of technology in ecological education; and the school ecology, focusing on the educational institutions as hubs of ecological learning and practice. Drawing on the five ecological dimensions into a cohesive and harmonious educational ecosystem. Such a system would nurture a deep appreciation and understanding of ecological values and foster a sustainable and regenerative relationship between humanity and the natural world. Rural ecological civilization education develops as a cornerstone in building a future where education and ecological consciousness are inextricably linked, supporting the flourishing of both society and the environment.
