Economic-Related Aspects of Pectinase in the Textile Industry

Textiles have experienced wet chemical procedures and protocols since old age. Human creativity imagination and technique are apparent in textile goods all over the ages. With the passage of time and technological advancement, enzymes are used in place of harsh hazardous chemical processes. They are non-toxic and help in reducing pollution. The specific textile enzymes used are pectinase, laccase, amylase, and catalase. A class of enzymes known as pectinases breaks down pectin compounds. The three main forms of pectinases that are important to the food industry are pectin esterases, depolymerizing pectinases and protopectinases. Pectin esterases remove the methoxyl residue from pectin while the other two enzyme convert the indissoluble protopectin into dissolvable pectin. Pectin substances are categorized into four main classes: protopectins, pectinic acids, pectins, and pectic acid. Protopectins are not soluble in water, whereas three of pectins either fully or moderately solvable. Pectinases are extensively found in the universe and are formed in different microbes, including prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Various microbes use different fermentation techniques like solid-state and submerged for pectinase production. The generation of pectinase depends critically on the optimalization of critical bioreactor factors and factors, including environment, pH, and duration of fermentation. Because microbial pectinase has applications in many industries, there is a growing global demand for its commercial production. There is widespread use of pectinases in the culinary, agricultural, environmental, and pharmaceutical industries. Textiles are necessary for daily life, and the fashion industry shows a substantial part in world economy. The making and consumption of textiles worldwide are growing in tandem with the global population. The textile sector is thought to be worth 1.1 trillion euros and hires more than three hundred million employees [33]. Global eco-friendly textile industry is anticipated to grow with annual average growth rate of 7.6% between 2023 and 2030, translating into a projected value of 77.17 billion USD. Reducing pollution and using more environmentally friendly alternatives instead of harsh chemicals is possible when using textile-found enzymes like pectinase. The textile industry is keen to use this sanitary method. Both water and energy consumption are decreased when pectinase is used. Since pectinase is non-toxic, the water can be recycled after cleansing. Energy efficiency boosts the economy and increases profitability. Reducing workplace fatalities and cancerous substances eventually leads to less medical expenses, higher productivity, and decreased absenteeism. Along with the consumption of pectinase from microbial sources, investigations should direct on engineered proteins to generate new powerful and flexible pectinases, as well as the improvement of manufacturing procedures utilizing novel microbes. Subsequent investigations into pectinolytic enzymes ought to focus on underlying mode of action governing enzyme release in addition to in what way distinct pectinolytic enzymes interact with various pectic substrates. This chapter tries to cover the introduction, classification, substrate, and textile industry applications of pectinase. It also summarized the bioprocessing processes of the textile industry using the pectinase enzyme. Further, the eco-friendly and economic-related aspects of pectinase are also briefly discussed.
