Effluent Treatment in Textile Industry to Achieve SDGs

Textile effluents are notorious for their intense coloration, high biological and chemical oxygen demands, and the presence of toxic compounds and pose severe health risks to communities living near industrial areas. Consumption of large amounts of water in the textile sector generates huge ratio of wastes including life-threatening chemicals like heavy metals and dyes organic compounds. The treatment of wastewater from textile sectors and various linked industries is particularly branched into three prime stages that include primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment. The textile effluent industry is continuously evolving as a response to growing environmental concerns, regulatory pressures, and technological advancements. Several future trends and advancements are likely to shape the landscape of textile effluent treatment and management such as circular economy practices. Various strategies are utilized to reduce pollution when dealing with dye in textile effluent, e.g, filtration, adsorption, and biodegradation utilizing specific microbes are examples of these approaches. It consists of a succession of stages that use different methods at each stage to remove contaminants and pollutants. Textile mills can use effective treatment strategies to lessen their environmental impact and potentially reuse treated water by following prescribed standards and taking into account the individual properties of the effluent. The industry will increasingly adopt eco-friendly dyes, chemicals, and materials that generate fewer pollutants in effluents, aligning with the principles of sustainable chemistry. Technological advancements, regulatory pressures, and changing consumer preferences will drive the industry toward more responsible and efficient management of effluents, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
