Proteases are enzymes found in various life forms and are classified based on their source (plant, animal, bacterial, fungal, and viral) and optimal pH range. This chapter explores the different types of proteases and their applications in textile wet processing, including desizing, bioscouring, biobleaching, and biopolishing. Proteases are revolutionizing the textile industry by presenting a sustainable and multifaceted approach to fabric processing. They are preferred over the harsh chemical methods used for degumming the silk and can better unveil the hidden luster and softness of silk. They are considered as enzymatic sculptors. They further prevent the wool's rough edges from felting and getting interlocked by sculpting a smoother surface to enhance the user experience. Notably, these enzymes present a sustainable edge. Besides the surface modifications, the proteases orchestrate the harmony of functionalities that enhance the fabric quality by improving smoothness and wicking properties. The chapter mainly highlights the impact of proteases on fabric quality and environmental sustainability. Moreover, we have discussed the different types of proteases (alkaline, acidic, and neutral) and their specific applications in silk degumming, wool finishing, and stain removal. Surpassing the traditional chemical treatments proteases can be dealt with under milder conditions which provide a good environmental impact by lesser energy consumption.
