The study of internal migration in India is crucial for understanding population redistribution, labour market dynamics, urbanisation, and regional disparities. Using data from the Census of India and the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), this paper explores the trends and patterns of internal migration in India, focusing on both economic and non-economic influencing factors. This paper reviews aggregate and disaggregate internal migration trends in India, highlighting the significant role of non-economic factors, especially in the post-reform period. Most migrations occur within states, influenced by social factors rather than solely economic opportunities. Finally, the paper also identifies limitations of official data, emphasising the need for more comprehensive and current data to better understand internal migration dynamics in India.
