A Study on Feasibility and Acceptability of an AI-Powered VR/AR Cognitive Rehabilitation Platform for Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia are progressive neurodegenerative disorders that cause cognitive decline and memory loss. They are the most common causes of dementia in older adults, affecting an estimated 50 million people worldwide. Even though AD and dementia are now incurable, there are medications that can assist to manage the symptoms and enhance quality of life. Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) have the power to completely change cognitive rehabilitation for AD and dementia sufferers. Programmes for cognitive rehabilitation that are individually crafted for each patient using AI are possible. AI can also be used to monitor patients’ development over time and pinpoint areas in which they require further assistance. VR can be used to develop immersive experiences that can aid individuals with Alzheimer's disease and dementia with their memory and cognitive function. VR can also be used to provide patients with safe and controlled practice opportunities for everyday activities. The platform leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to dynamically adapt cognitive rehabilitation exercises within immersive virtual environments. A diverse cohort of patients participated in a multi-phase trial, engaging with the platform over a prescribed period. Data on user engagement, cognitive performance, and participant feedback were systematically collected and analyzed. Preliminary results indicate high levels of feasibility, with participants demonstrating significant improvements in cognitive function. Moreover, the platform received favorable feedback from both patients and caregivers, highlighting its acceptability and potential as a valuable tool in treating of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. This study underscores the promising impact of combining AI with VR/AR technologies in cognitive rehabilitation interventions, warranting further research in this burgeoning field.
