Role of Dietary Supplements in Cancer Prevention

Cancer continues to be a pressing global health concern, impacting millions of lives annually. While conventional cancer treatments have made significant progress, there is a growing interest in alternative approaches, especially focusing on dietary phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are natural compounds derived from plants that have shown considerable promise in cancer prevention, treatment, and management. Phytochemicals, including polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, and glycosylates, are abundant in fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices. Research has shown these compounds possess anticancer properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative effects. They target cancer pathways, making them promise for prevention and adjunctive therapy. Phytochemicals primarily act through antioxidant activity, countering cancer-promoting reactive oxygen species (ROS). Compounds like resveratrol and green tea polyphenols scavenge ROS. Phytochemicals also exhibit anti-inflammatory properties, suppressing cancer growth by modulating pro-inflammatory pathways and cytokines, as seen with curcumin from turmeric. Crucially, phytochemicals have anti-proliferative effects, disrupting cancer cell cycle progression and inducing apoptosis such as Sulforaphane in broccoli and quercetin in onions. Moreover, phytochemicals disrupt cell cycle progression and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. They also contribute to overall well-being, which is vital for cancer patients. Further research is needed to understand their mechanisms and optimal dosages for utilizing dietary phytochemicals in cancer treatment and management.
