Morphometric Analysis of the Koyna Watershed Using Geospatial Techniques for Groundwater Prospects

Morphometric analysisMorphometric analysis was carried out utilizing geographic methods to look at the drainage structure and features of the Koyna watershedKoyna watershed using topographical maps and satellite data. This 1107 km2 study centers on one of the Krishna River basin’sKrishna River Basin sub-basins in the Satara district of Maharashtra. Using techniques from Horton, Schumn, Miller, Strahler, and others, morphometric properties such as stream orderStream order, bifurcation ratioBifurcation ratio, stream lengthStream length, drainage densityDrainage density, circularity ratioCircularity ratio, relief ratioRelief ratio, stream frequencyStream frequency, elongation ratioElongation ratio, and compactness constant were calculated. During the field visit, GPS was used to mark the necessary places. The Koyna basin has a dendritic to sub-dendritic drainage structure and is categorized as a sixth-order drainage basin. The drainage density of the basin is coarse, indicating a good potential for groundwaterGroundwater. The majority of the stream, or 50.55% of the total length of 3505.8 km, is made up of first-order streams, which get shorter as the stream orderStream order gets higher. From first-order to sixth-order streams, the stream lengthStream length ratio, which ranges from 0.97 to 3.66, indicates rising groundwater potential. Across stream ordersStream order, the mean stream length ranges from 0.35 to 0.63 km. The elongated basin form with a high peak flow of short duration is indicated by the estimated form factorForm factor value of 0.192. When combined with the drainage densityDrainage density, the basin’s 6.65 streams per km2 stream frequencyStream frequency indicates an acceptable stream frequency. Overall, the analysis shows that the region has excellent groundwater prospects, which are reinforced by a network of streams that are evenly spaced out and contribute to the provision of groundwater.
