Sustainable Landfilling of Municipal Solid Waste

  • Yunmin Chen

摘要

This chapter delves into approach to sustainable landfilling, leveraging insights derived from the degradation‒consolidation theory to manage waste degradation and stabilization within MSW landfills. Beginning with an exploration of the sustainable landfilling concept, the chapter subsequently details several strategies, including large-scale intensive landfilling and landfill capacity recycling, to mitigate environmental impacts and maximize landfill capacity recycling. The chapter then addresses mass transformations and carbon emissions associated with landfilled MSW, presenting pathways for mass transformation throughout the lifecycle of MSW and assessment methods for carbon emissions. The discussion then focuses on the exploitation potential of MSW landfills, considering the degradation and stabilization effects of fine particles and pollutants, and presents assessment methodologies. Additionally, aerobic accelerated stabilization and in-situ dehydration treatment are explored as means of enhancing landfill exploitation potential. Finally, the chapter discusses the mining and screening of landfilled MSW based on the project of the Woqishan Landfill in Wenzhou, China, covering the physicochemical properties and resource utilization of fine fractions derived from these processes.
