  • Shaonli Bhowmik

摘要

Using notable works from Bengali literature such as Titash Ekti Nadir Naam by Adwaita Mallabarman and Hansuli Banker Upakatha by Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, this research paper analyses how riparian novels written in the Bengali language explore and depict crises, including natural disasters, social upheavals, and environmental challenges. Rivers, with their dynamic nature and complex interactions with adjacent water systems, also provide a distinctive perspective for exploring the Anthropocene era. This paper tries to provide a unique perspective on the challenges faced by communities along river banks and their adaptive responses during times of crisis by delving into the intricate relationship between human communities and their riparian environments and examining sociocultural, historical, and ecological dimensions within the literary works. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach encompassing literary analysis, cultural studies, and environmental and anthropological perspectives, the study uncovers the specificities of crisis and resilience portrayed in these riparian novels. Through harnessing the potency of literature, we can delve into a profound understanding of the ecological intricacies and human engagements intertwined within these exceptional environments. This paper explores the responsive nature of these narratives, examining how they serve as a platform for social critique, resistance, and reflections on community resilience in the face of adversity. It reveals the unique literary techniques, narrative strategies, and thematic concerns employed by Bengali authors to capture the complexities of crisis and resilience in riparian communities. The findings deepen our understanding of riparian novels in Bengali literature and contribute to the broader discourse on crisis, catastrophe, and responsive literature in India. Additionally, the research highlights the significance of these works in promoting environmental consciousness, sustainable practices, and cultural awareness.
