China is one of the countries with the highest incidence of HCC globally. The numbers of patients with HCC who receive surgical resection or are diagnosed pathologically ranks among the top in the world. As a result, China has also accumulated rich experience in clinicopathological diagnosis and studies of HCC. With the continuous improvement of hepatic surgery techniques and the rapid development of tumor molecular pathology techniques, clinicopathological research of HCC has made great progress accordingly. Especially in the past decade, the accuracy and standardization of pathological diagnosis of HCC have been significantly improved in China in terms of standardization of liver tumor specimen sampling protocol, regularization of histopathological diagnosis, modeling of immunopathological diagnosis, refinement of molecular pathology diagnosis, etc. The key objectives of the current development of HCC pathology in China are to meet the needs of clinical individualized treatment to improve the long-term survival outcomes of patients with HCC, to establish a standardized pathological diagnosis system of HCC with Chinese characteristics and experience, and to promote and apply the Practice Guidelines for the Pathological Diagnosis of Liver Cancer, further highlighting the clinically oriented basic development strategy and ideas of HCC pathology in China.
