An optical diffuser using negative dielectric anisotropic liquid crystal, MBBA, doped with 0.1 wt% CTAB ionic agent is fabricated. The electrohydrodynamic instabilities in the MBBA liquid crystal are exploited to develop the optical diffuser. The transmitted light diffusion for an incident light can be electrically modulated using the applied voltage. In the present study, the light diffusion property of the device is studied for 0–40 volt peak-to-peak (Vpp). A uniform light diffusion is recorded for the 40 Vpp. The characterization results suggest that this film has a potential application in smart windows and optoelectronic devices as light-scattering devices.

摘要
