For machine tools with external mechanical spindle motor, there is a significant problem: when the traditional finite element (FE) model is used for thermal characteristic analysis, the test and the simulation results are significantly different. This leads to low reliability in the forward design and thermal balance design of machine tools by the traditional FE model. Therefore, this paper proposes the thermal characteristic analysis (TCA) model that allows various heat transfer modes and heat generation of the feed system in the enabling state. Then, the FE analysis results are compared and analyzed by constructing the thermal characteristic testbed. The results show that the temperature and deformation fields obtained by the two methods are generally consistent, which proves that the constructed TCA model can quickly and accurately obtain the thermal performance of the machine tool with external mechanical spindle.
