Dietary Guidelines, Sustainability and Consumers
摘要
Diet is of key importance for human well-being. It is a modifiable risk factor influencing human health and that of the planet. The food choices we make significantly impact not only our personal health but also environmental sustainability. National dietary guidelines play a crucial role in promoting healthy eating habits, managing and controlling chronic disease risk factors, but only a few of them provide comprehensive advice to consumers about sustainability. By providing evidence-based recommendations, dietary guidelines can help individuals make informed dietary choices that support overall health and planetary well-being. This chapter explores the interconnected roles of dietary guidelines, sustainability and consumer behaviour. It examines how dietary guidelines aim to enhance public health by promoting balanced and nutritious eating habits while also responding to pressures from society. Through emphasising the importance of sustainable food choices and the critical role consumers play in adopting this advice, dietary guidelines can support both personal health and environmental sustainability. Integrating sustainability into dietary recommendations can foster a more holistic approach to health and the natural environment.
