Impact of Covid-19 on Tropospheric Ozone Over Jharkhand State, India

The impact of COVID-19 has been widely studied to assess air quality worldwide. In this paper, the air quality of Jharkhand has been studied to check the impact on ozone concentration due to the COVID-19 lockdown. The horizontal and vertical ozone scenarios over Jharkhand have been assessed for 2019, 2020, and 2021. Aqua/ARIS stropospheric ozone data was downloaded using the Giovanni platform. Horizontally, an ozone level of 42.88 DU (Dobson) was observed during the year 2020, which is less than the values obtained for the year 2019 (44.12 DU) and year 2020 (43.20 DU). A very good agreement was noticed for monthly tropospheric ozone data with R2 = 0.89 to 0.96. Seasonal analysis showed a high ozone value of 51.18 DU during the pre-monsoon season and the lowest value of 39.44 DU during the monsoon season in Jharkhand. Moreover, district-level analysis depicted that during the pre-monsoon season, minimum and maximum values of ozone ranges from 48.27 DU (Purbi Singhbhum) to 52.10 DU (Palamu) and 49.79 DU (Purbi Singhbhum) to 52.39 DU (Chatra) respectively. An increment of 1.46% in ozone level was observed at 1000 hPa in 2020, whereas a decrement of 1.01% was noticed in 2021 compared to 2019 and 2020 over Jharkhand. The current study establishes the existence and variation of tropospheric ozone over the Jharkhand state, focusing on temporal duration 2019–2021, which would be helpful in further research and its precursors present in the air.
