Benzo Alpha Pyrene Inventory in Different Environmental Media, India

Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) is a chemical belonging to a set of global pollutants classified as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Since 1998, PAHs have been listed in the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP) Protocol on Persistent Organic Pollutants. There have been very limited studies in India to understand the inventories and fluxes of BaP in the different environmental media (air, water, soil, sediment, and vegetation). This study has bridged the gap by considering six different emission sources and combining an inventory of BaP in the Indian Environment at 3.75° × 3.75° resolution from 1970 to 2018. In the present work, a multimedia model was used to calculate the inventory of BaP in different environmental compartments and inter-compartmental fluxes for the year 2018. The result showed that the highest BaP inventory was in soil and the least in freshwater. Therefore, this project targeted an important, hitherto unexplored area of modeling of BaP in the Indian context, despite the urgency highlighted by the lack of knowledge in this field.
