In 1866, the second year after the end of the American Civil War, cities and countryside in the South were still searching for a new order on the ravaged land, while the dark clouds of war had vanished in the northern sky. Steamboats shuttled back and forth on the Ohio River, and hundreds of trains ran daily between cities in the northeast.
