Exploring the Landscape of AI-Generated Output: Challenges and Regulatory Insights

The concept of artificial intelligence (AI) was initially introduced in the 1940s, when some philosophers and mathematicians tried to describe human thinking as the mechanical manipulation of symbols. The term “artificial intelligence” was coined in 1956, at a workshop held at Dartmouth College, where some of the pioneers of AI research gathered to discuss the possibility and challenges of creating machines as intelligent as humans. The need for regulation of AI has been voiced by experts and advocates in responsible AI, AI ethics, consumer protection, and cybersecurity since at least the 1960s. However, the regulation of AI is still an emerging issue in many jurisdictions, and there is no consensus on what, when, and how the uses and applications of AI should be regulated. Some of the challenges and controversies of regulating AI include the definition and scope of AI, the ethical and social implications of AI, the balance between innovation and regulation, the accountability and transparency of AI systems, and the global coordination and cooperation of AI governance. The chapter promotes the adoption of proactive strategies in response to the rapid development of AI technology, emphasizing the importance of a well-rounded strategy that recognizes both the constraints and potential of AI systems. In conclusion, the chapter argues for a transition toward conducting ethical evaluations after the deployment phase, with a focus on the significance of retrospective legislation to tackle any negative consequences.
