Micro-Particle Deposition Patterns in the Nasal Cavity with Different Types of Deviations

The anatomical features of the nasal cavities generally influence the micro-particle depositions inside the nasal cavities. The anatomical structure of the nasal flow passages significantly alters due to different types of deviations. Most of the studies mainly focussed on particle deposition in the healthy nasal cavity, although some past studies discussed particle deposition in some pathological geometries. However, in the literature, the regional particle deposition patterns are lacking for different types of deviations. The current study focuses on regional particle deposition patterns for three different types of deviations, S-shaped, C-shaped, and reverse C-shaped, by using Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT). The insilico results indicate significant differences in the deposition patterns in these three different deviations. Further, it was observed that the deposition patterns again alter in different inspiratory flow rates. At a flow rate of 15 L/min, the reverse C-shaped model exhibited the highest deposition, reaching the deposition fraction of 98%. Conversely, when the flow rate was reduced to 5 L/min, the same model only demonstrated the lowest deposition of 59%. The study will help to predict the hotspot regions for the airborne pollutants inside the nasal cavities so that doctors can plan their treatments effectively.
