Current Evidence in the Management of Recurrent Breast Cancer

The management of recurrent breast carcinoma varies depending on the type, location, and extent of recurrence, as well as the patient’s general health and previous treatment history. Evaluation is done by detailed assessment of initial tumor treatment, histopathological testing of the recurrence, and distant metastatic workup. Currently, the most commonly used options for managing recurrent breast cancer include Systemic therapy (hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy) and local therapy (surgery and radiation therapy). The choice of treatment depends on several factors such as the type of breast cancer, the patient age, medical history, and the presence of other medical conditions. A multidisciplinary team approach, involving a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and surgeon, is often used to determine the best course of action for each patient. It is important that each patient with recurrent breast cancer is discussed in a multidisciplinary board to discuss their treatment options and to determine the best course of action for their individual circumstances.
