Pathology and Molecular Classification of Breast Cancer

Cancers of the breast are a heterogeneous group of neoplasm and have a wide range of prognoses and treatment options. Traditionally, morphology-based classification is used to facilitate oncologic decision-making by facilitating accurate diagnosis and prognostic stratification of these tumors. The recent findings on the molecular pathology of breast cancer have a promising role to play in optimizing the current tumor classification and expanding prognostic and predictive capabilities. As of now, these are at the initial stages of development, and tumor histomorphology in conjunction with immunohistochemical tests provides equivalent information. The molecular pathology insights will, however, play an increasingly important role in advancing precision medicine. A brief overview of breast cancer pathology is provided in this chapter. Furthermore, it discusses current evidence in the pathology and classification of breast carcinoma, including molecular classification.
