Breeding for Insect Pest Resistance in Oilseed Crops Through Genomics-Assisted Breeding

Breeding oilseed crops to enhance resistance against insect pest is a crucial endeavour with the objective of ensuring food security and advancing environmental sustainability in agriculture. This abstract explores the integration of genomics-assisted breeding techniques to enhance pest resistance in oilseed crops, aiming to overcome the limitations of conventional pest control methods, such as chemical pesticides. Genomics-assisted breeding combines advanced genomic technologies with traditional breeding approaches, allowing for the identification of specific genes or genomic regions associated with insect resistance traits. Marker-assisted selection (MAS) accelerates breeding by precisely identifying plants possessing desired resistance traits, whereas genome-wide association studies (GWAS) shed light on the genetic basis of insect resistance. Genetic diversity within oilseed crops, including wild relatives and breeding populations, offers a valuable resource for trait improvement. Various genomic databases and repositories facilitate research and breeding efforts by providing access to comprehensive genomic resources and data for oilseed crops. Furthermore, examples of successful utilization of MAS in developing insect-resistant varieties across different oilseed crops are presented. Despite the promise of genomics-assisted breeding, challenges and considerations exist, particularly regarding the deployment of genome editing technologies for insect resistance breeding. Off-target effects, regulatory compliance, and ethical considerations must be addressed to ensure the safety and acceptance of genome-edited crops. Future directions in enhancing insect resistance involve the integration of emerging technologies, such as multi-omics approaches, microbial symbionts, and ecological strategies to develop resilient cultivars and sustainable pest management practices. By leveraging the potential of interdisciplinary approaches, researchers aim to address the challenges posed by insect pests while promoting agricultural sustainability and food security in oilseed crops.
