Towards Organizational Readiness at Our Home Institution

Chapter 3 introduces Single Case Design—Entrustable Professional Activity (SCD-EPA) as the methodological core of the project that resulted in the three studies discussed in Chapters 5 – 7 . In this ninth chapter, key lessons learned from these chapters together—including anecdotal experiences of the research team not shared in any of the earlier chapters in this book—are discussed with the interest to facilitate the implementation of SCD-EPA for new training-and-research-integrated projects in different settings. This is done by revising each of the four phases of SCD-EPA outlined in Chapter 3 . For the first phase (theoretical and practical foundation), we provide an updated approach to data collection and analysis for the preparation of a new program. For the second phase (readiness planning), we provide guidance on the involvement of relevant stakeholder groups in readiness planning and in the selection of EPAs. Regarding the third phase (assessment and measurement system), we reflect on different types of outcome measures, how to reduce missing data, and several options for the design of control comparisons. And finally, for the fourth phase, we provide analytical solutions and possible interpretations of different types of effects that may occur. In addition, several suggestions for future research are provided in relation to questions concerning the different phases of SCD-EPA.
