On the Practical Context of Specialized Healthcare Education

The intervention described in this book aims to promote the professional development of preceptors and residents, through two innovative training programs focused on the development of interpersonal skills, with the aim of building a stronger healthcare system contributing to the wellbeing of professionals and a culture centered around the patient and family. This fourth chapter focuses on the clinical and legal context in which the programs have been developed locally, in a tertiary level hospital in Cantabria, and also at the national and international level (Europe, Latin America, USA, Canada, and Australia), with the interest of reflecting in Chapter 10 on lessons learned from the implementation of these innovative training programs and that can be helpful in other geographically or culturally different contexts. The central methodology of the project that lies at the core of this book, Single Case Design—Entrustable Professional Activity (SCD-EPA) comprises 4 phases, with this fourth chapter constituting an important part of the first phase (theoretical and practical foundation). The analysis of the clinical and contextual (including cultural) environment, as well as the knowledge of the legal aspects that regulate specialized healthcare education, enables the elaboration of a readiness plan for a training program, which constitutes phase 2 of SCD-EPA.
