How the UN Mission Affects the Socio-economic Performance in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq?
摘要
The Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) is facing a complicated crisis compounding concurrent and mutually aggravating security, political, economic, and social risks. It has been impacted by three multifaceted disasters within a short period, namely the Syrian civil war in 2012 which resulted in a mass refugee inflow to the KRI, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) crises in 2014, and lastly, the KRI and the federal government of Iraq dispute that led to KRI budget crisis. The United Nations’ involvement in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has remarkably impacted its social and economic progress. By helping to resolve conflicts and promote peace, it has helped create a stable environment for businesses to thrive. The UN has also provided aid to those in need, helping them recover from the effects of war and displacement. The United Nations mission in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has been instrumental in tackling the challenges faced by internally displaced persons (IDPs) and migrants. This research focuses on the effect of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on the performance of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in terms of refugee care. This research will cover the humanitarian assistance provided during the crisis facing KRG by the IOM, and how this assistance helped KRG perform better during the hard times. In addition, it will discuss the programs conducted by the UNDP during the post-conflict situation to improve the human kills, raise awareness on different aspects, and increase the economy of the KRG. A mixed methodology is applied to achieve the stated aim of this research. Twenty interviews were conducted to attain the primary data, and relevant literature was reviewed to obtain the secondary data. This study will help the government assess and evaluate the work conducted by international organizations.
