This chapter summarizes the contribution of CAS Earth Poles project to research on sustainable development in the three polar regions in terms of data products, scientific discovery, and decision support. Two case studies are presented to assess the status of the SDGs in Arctic and economic damage to infrastructure caused by future permafrost degradation in Third Pole. The sustainability of eight Arctic countries from 2000 to 2020 is gradual improved especially in SDG 10 (reduction of inequality), SDG 3 (health improvement), and SDG 4 (quality of education). In Third Pole, an additional cost of approximately $6.3 billion will be needed to maintain the services of the current infrastructure under the SSP245 by 2100. Strategic adaptations can potentially save 21% of these costs. Controlling global warming to below 1.5 °C will reduce the costs by $1.3 billion relative to the 2 °C target of the Paris Agreement. Next, priority actions in scientific community to achieve the SDGs are recommended, including the revision and localization of the SDG indicators for polar regions, strengthening of cyberinfrastructure and observation systems, and clarification of the tipping points and their telecoupling effect. Moreover, several policy aspects are discussed to achieve sustainable development in the three polar regions.
