Land Use and Land Change (LULC) give an effective representation of the interaction of human activities with the environment. In this regard, monitoring and analysis of LULC over time can be used to study and map the effects of human activities on the environment. This paper attempts to analyse and map the LULC trends in the Sutlej watershed in decade periods-1990 to 2000, 2000 to 2010, and 2010 to 2020. The GIS technique has been used to study the raster and vector data along with digitization of the topographical maps. Multi-temporal satellite imagery from the USGS Landsat OLI-TIRS, TM and ETM sensor data series have been used to analyse these changes. The LULC maps for the watershed have been constructed using maximum probability categorization with monitored classification techniques and classified into five major LULC classes viz; built-up area, barren land, dense forest, vegetation and water bodies. Results show built-up area increased by 55.29% while the dense forest, vegetation, barren land and water bodies have decreased by 05.00%, 32.98%, 24.49% and 0.29% respectively. The accuracy of the classified map was evaluated using ground truth point using the matrix and has shown an overall accuracy of 89% and a kappa coefficient of 0.88 in 2020. The findings of this study can be appropriately used in policy making and its implications for sustainable LULC management in the Sutlej watershed of Punjab.

摘要
