SEBAL-Based Evapotranspiration Assessment with Landsat 8 Data in an Irrigation Command Area

The Landsat-8 data over the Mayurakshi Reservoir command area were used in this study together with the Surface-Balanced Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) approach. The reservoir provides irrigation water for the boro crop over a large area (20,000 ha). Various parameters of SEBAL, namely land Surface temperature, sensible heat flux, Net radiation, ground heat flux, and latent heat flux were calculated from Landsat-8 data. The required reference evapotranspiration was also computed using weather data. The result represents the ET-24 h which ranges between 0.437 mm/day and 8.522 mm/day, where most of the agricultural lands showed evapotranspiration values in between 5.828 and 8.522 mm/day. Penman’s equation has been used to check the estimated ET from SEBAL. Results show that Penman’s equation gave the PET value of 3.40 mm/day, which is in the range of ET computed from SEBAL.
