Ancient Salt Roads in Western China

This chapter focuses on the ancient salt routes of western China, specifically the Chuan salt route, examining the origins, development, and distribution of the Bashu ancient salt route and its economic and cultural impacts on the surrounding regions. Chuan salt, being well salt, is mainly distributed in mountainous areas, with transportation routes traversing the mountains. Through a systematic reconstruction of the Chuan salt route’s distribution, combined with comprehensive field research, the study investigates the formation, development, and decline of ancient salt towns along the Bashu salt route. It thoroughly discusses the architectural characteristics, forms, and technical inheritance of these salt towns, with an in-depth exploration of typical buildings such as residences and guild halls along the route. The research reveals not only the historical economic functions of the Chuan salt route but also its significant role in promoting economic growth and cultural dissemination.
