Overview of Ancient Salt Roads of China
摘要
This chapter systematically explores the multifaceted roles of salt in ancient Chinese society, ranging from cultural beliefs to economic taxation, elucidating the profound impact of the salt industry on feudal society. The study traces the discovery of edible salt, the evolution of production techniques, and the historical development of transportation and distribution systems. Analyzing salt industry taxation and distribution routes reveals the formation and distribution of salt zones and ancient salt routes. Using an interdisciplinary approach, combining historical documents with Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, the chapter unveils the interaction between the salt industry, social structures, and cultural beliefs. Based on the segmentation of the salt industry and using ancient salt routes as a carrier, this chapter offers a new perspective on the complexity and cultural significance of ancient salt routes, laying a solid foundation for subsequent studies on the historical status, cultural value, and the material and intangible cultural heritage along these routes.
