History of Sizing System

This chapter explores the development of clothing sizing methods over time, from the days of custom tailoring to the current era of mass-produced apparel. It looks into how the Industrial Revolution, trade laws, guilds, and royal decrees all influenced the creation of standardized size. The chapter examines the difficulties and constraints associated with early size attempts, as well as the development of contemporary sizing tables and charts in the twentieth century. In addition, it looks at how the World War II and post-war commercial culture affected sizing conventions and critically assesses modern sizing schemes, calling attention to problems like “vanity sizing” and inclusion constraints.
