Digitalization Impact on Sustainability in Garments Industry

  • Aqsa Imran

摘要

Digitalization has ushered in a transformative wave in the garments industry, profoundly influencing sustainability practices. One of its most significant contributions lies in fostering transparency across the supply chain. Technologies like blockchain enable the tracing of materials from source to finished product, unveiling unsustainable practices such as labor exploitation and environmental harm. Moreover, digital tools like computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D modeling optimize production processes, reducing material waste by allowing designers to visualize garments digitally before physical production. This shift toward on-demand manufacturing further curtails overstock and waste. Additionally, digital platforms facilitate efficient inventory management, enabling real-time tracking of inventory levels and consumer demand, thus minimizing excess inventory and markdowns. Enhanced communication and collaboration among stakeholders foster collective efforts toward sustainability, while data-driven initiatives leverage digital data to identify areas for improvement in resource utilization and environmental impact. Furthermore, digital platforms empower brands to engage manufacturers in sustainable practices, raising awareness and promoting responsible manufacturing. In sum, digitalization is pivotal in driving sustainability in the garments industry, encouraging transparency, efficiency, and innovation toward a more environmentally and socially conscious future.
