Recognition and Approach to a Sick Child
摘要
The sick child assessment follows a systematic ABCDEFG approach, evaluating Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Exposure, and Glucose levels. Secondary assessment includes history-taking, signs/symptoms, nutrition, and risk stratification using the “Traffic Light” system (Green, Amber, Red). Red flags warrant immediate referral. Investigations (e.g., blood tests, urine/stool analysis, chest x-ray) support diagnosis. Treatment prioritizes shock management, fever control, judicious antibiotic use, and ORS for dehydration. Parental counseling emphasizes the “4Fs”: Feeding, Fluids, Follow-up, and Fast response to warning signs like lethargy, poor feeding, or dehydration. Safety netting ensures timely care and improves outcomes in acutely unwell children.
