Hong merchants and supercargoes played pivotal roles in China-British trade during the Qing dynasty before the Opium War. On the British side, their interactions and negotiations have been recorded in the archives of the Canton Management Committee or the Select Committee of the East India Company (hereinafter called the EIC), now deposited in the India Office Library and Records.
