Forced Migration, Space-Making Crisis and Government-Led Interventions in Informal Settlements of Southwest, Nigeria

In this chapter, Temitope Yetunde Bello pointed out that in recent times, African countries have witnessed natural and human-made disasters and conflicts that have resulted in a constant rise in forced migration particularly in the urban informal and semi-formal sectors. While local authorities encounter complex urbanisation challenges and direct policy decisions towards managing urban spaces and resources, there has equally been large influxes of forced migrants from the northern parts of the country who move to southwest urban markets. Though scholarly contributions have identified how forced migrants have broadly changed the dynamics of urbanisation, how displaced persons create identities and livelihoods in urban markets and the extent of subsequent governmental interventions in addressing potential and manifesting crisis is understudied.
