With regard to the year marking the beginning of globalization, almost all Western scholars fix it as 1492, the year when Columbus discovered the New World. We believe, however, this historical moment should be advanced to between 138 and 119 BC (that was when Zhang Qian, an ancient Chinese envoy, explored the Western Regions). Zhang Qian’s journey not only strengthened the political, economic and cultural ties between the Western regions and the Western Han Dynasty, but also marked the beginning of the process of globalization. This event also paid the way for the creation of the “Silk Road” and the subsequent “Maritime Silk Road”.
