摘要

As an important versatile vegetable oil, palm oil and its wastes can be used as feedstock for various industries. Globally, palm oil contributed nearly 60% of global oilseed exports and the amount of palm oil production causes a lot of palm oil waste. Palm oil waste can also be referred to as oil palm biomass because it is natural waste from nature. Palm oil waste consists of several kinds of waste namely palm oil mill effluent (POME), empty fruit bunch (EFB), mesocarp fiber (MF), palm kernel shell (PKS), palm kernel meal (PKM), palm oil trunk (POT), and palm oil frond (POF). The palm oil waste contained a lot of lignocellulosic materials which can be utilized into various products with high economic value. Apart from being economically profitable, palm oil waste reprocessing can be an alternative solution for a sustainable environment and for sustainable food resources. This chapter is aimed to bring to light the accumulated findings and knowledge of the nutritional value of the available palm oil biomass, either on-site plantation or in-site processing mill biomass. The usage of palm oil wastes either traditional or modern approaches as food resources for a sustainable food industry is also discussed.
