From Seed to Table: A Business Case Study on Promoting a Sustainable Agri-Food System in East China
摘要
This case study focuses on Yuefengdao Organic Farm, an enterprise working on seed conservation and organic farming in East China, in partnership with Chuodunshan village, Kunshan Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, research institutes, and the Farmers’ Seed Network. The enterprise’s work is aimed at promoting the conservation and sustainable use of rice landraces and organic rice farming, which can lead to multiple socio-ecological benefits, including habitat restoration, ecotourism, climate change adaptation, and rural vitalization. The “From Seed to Table” initiative is a comprehensive approach that links community and market with a framework for a corporate biodiversity protection strategy based on spatial-temporal dimensions. Ensuring that the economic benefits of agrobiodiversity and sustainable farming are distributed equitably among stakeholders is essential. The case study highlights the importance of investing in agrobiodiversity and sustainable farming for promoting a diversified and healthy food system transformation through biodiversity conservation, utilization of ecosystem services, and rural development. Small- and medium-sized agribusinesses have a crucial role to play in achieving sustainable and equitable agricultural systems.
