Optimizing Soils for Regenerative Agriculture: A Case Study in Odisha
摘要
This chapter provides a detailed assessment of the soil health status across various districts in Odisha, highlighting the critical need for adopting regenerative agriculture (RA) practices to improve soil fertility and sustainability. The study reveals significant challenges, including widespread soil acidity and deficiencies in essential nutrients such as organic carbon, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, zinc, and boron. Through extensive soil analysis, the manuscript identifies the varying nutrient profiles and soil reactions in different districts, emphasizing the necessity for customized soil management practices. The manuscript advocates for the implementation of RA practices like cover cropping, reduced tillage, and organic amendments to address these soil health issues. These practices not only enhance soil structure and nutrient availability but also contribute to long-term sustainability by improving water retention, reducing erosion, and increasing biodiversity. The study also highlights the importance of establishing a robust soil health monitoring system to provide farmers with accurate and timely information for effective soil management. Furthermore, the manuscript underscores the need for integrated nutrient management strategies, combining organic and inorganic sources to replenish soil nutrients and enhance crop productivity. It calls for comprehensive training programs to educate farmers, extension workers, and agricultural professionals on the benefits and application of RA practices. Policy support and financial incentives are recommended to encourage the adoption of sustainable farming methods, along with ongoing research and development to innovate and refine soil management techniques. By adopting these strategies, Odisha can achieve significant improvements in agricultural productivity, ensure food security, and promote environmental sustainability. The transition to RA will provide resilience against climate variability, support the local farming community, and contribute to broader environmental goals such as carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation.
