The ideal chemical composition of muscovite is SiO 2 45.2%, Al 2O 3 38.4%, K 2O 11.8%, and H 2O 4.5% (see Table 1 for the major chemical composition and properties of minerals). However, natural muscovite-like mineral samples often exhibit compositions lower than their ideal chemical formulae (Table 1), with average contents of Al 2O 3 at 32.94% and K 2O at 10.51%. The shortfall from the ideal chemical composition is typically compensated by other chemical components such as Fe 2O 3, TiO 2, CaO, MgO, Na 2O, etc. Actually, this situation is commonly found in other minerals, such as a certain clinopyroxene and a certain biotite (see chapter “Chemical Formula of Minerals,” Tables 3 and 4). The basic characteristics of these chemical components are as follows.
