Chemical Composition and Properties of Minerals

Table 1 shows the theoretical chemical composition of some common minerals. It can be observed that weight percent of these chemical components range from a few percent (such as the 4.5% of H 2O in muscovite) to 100% (such as the SiO 2 in quartz). However, they are all essential components of the respective minerals and have a significant impact on the physical and chemical properties of the minerals. Therefore, they are considered the major chemical components of the minerals, and the elements involved are generally referred to as bulk elements or major elements. It can be seen from this that the major chemical composition of minerals refers to the chemical composition that minerals must have and mainly determines their physical and chemical properties.
