Muscovite (K{Al 2[AlSi 3O 10](OH) 2} or K 2O·3Al 2O 3·6SiO 2·2H 2O) is a potassium-rich aluminosilicate with a 2:1-type (TOT-type) dioctahedral layer structure. Illite, also known as hydrous mica, has similar crystallochemical characteristics to muscovite. However, compared with muscovite, it has the characteristics of more water and less potassium, so it can be regarded as a variety of muscovite. In the classification of mineral crystal chemistry, muscovite belongs to the silicate class, the layer-structured silicate subclass, the mica group, and the muscovite subgroup. In the structural-functional classification of mineral raw materials in mineral material science, muscovite belongs to the two-dimensional structural mineral category and the functional mineral subcategory.
