Sepiolite (Mg 8(H 2O) 4[Si 4O 10] 3(OH) 4·8H 2O or 4MgO·6SiO 2·7H 2O) is a magnesium-rich silicate with a 2:1-type (TOT-type) trioctahedral layer-chain structure. Sepiolite has similar crystal chemical characteristics to attapulgite. In the classification of mineral crystal chemistry, both belong to the silicates, the layer-structured silicate subclass, and the palygorskite group. In mineral material science, in the structural-functional classification of mineral raw materials, sepiolite belongs to the one-dimensional structural mineral category and the functional mineral subcategory.

In mineral material science, in the structural-functional classification of mineral raw materials, sepiolite belongs to the one-dimensional structural mineral category and the functional mineral subcategory.
