摘要

Researchers are exploring the significant environmental advantages of biochar. Its dual capacity to sequester carbon and enhance soil properties makes it a sustainable soil amendment. Biochar assists in the well-being of both agriculture and environment by reducing emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs), leaching of soil nitrogen, and simultaneously improving soil fertility and crop yield. On application biochar interacts with soil properties where microbes and plant roots play an important role. To gain a deeper understanding, extensive long-term field tests involving different biochars, soils, and crop varieties are essential. Careful planning is crucial to maximize the biochar’s benefits as a soil additive by matching it with specific soil properties. This chapter provides a review on biochar properties and potential soil reactions, with particular highlight on its efficacy to reduce GHGs emission.
