Microstructure, Mechanical and Corrosion Properties of the AISI 316 Stainless Steel/Nitronic 50 Steel Produced by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Using Nickel Interlayer

This study explores dissimilar welding between AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel (ASS) and Nitronic 50 steel, created through TIG welding with the use of a Ni-interlayer. A TIG welding process, aided by a 0.1mm Ni-interlayer, achieved through-thickness penetration in 2mm thick plates in a single pass. The fusion zone (FZ), developed with the aid of the interlayer, exhibited a columnar dendritic structure. Epitaxial growth was observed at the interfaces on both sides of the base metals (BM). The incorporation of interlayers resulted in an enhancement of impact and tensile strength in the weld joints, with no significant compromise in corrosion resistance.
